Supraorbital nerve blocks are an effective treatment for frontal headaches. They are sometimes performed alongside greater occiptal nerve blocks to enhance their effect. They are given as a small injection just above the eyebrow. The treatment takes about 15 minutes to administer. Repeat treatment can be performed, generally every 3 months.
There are two nerves that are generally invloved with frontal headaches; the supratrochlear and the supraorbital nerves. Some patients will require one type of nerve block while others will require both. Sometimes these nerve blocks are combined with greateroccipital nerve blocks for greater effect. The decision will depend on your symptoms. The nerve blocks are administered by so-called 'landmark technique' using feel to identify the correct location for the injection. Precision imaging can also be used to direct needle placement, but is usually not necessary.
