Greater occipital nerve blocks are an effective treatment for cluster headache and migraine. They are given as a small injection of local anaesthetic and steroid medication at the top of the neck or the back of the head. The treatment takes about 15 minutes to administer. Repeat treatment can be performed, generally every 3 months, but this interval can be extended if you respond well to treatment.
